Most of the new mothers have some feelings after child birth. If these feeling are mild, the condition is called as Postpartum blues or Baby blues. When the feelings are serious, it is called as postpartum depression. Post partum depression (PPD) is also called as postnatal depression, generally observed in women and rarely in men, in first few months after child birth. Some reports are showing the percentage of people gets affected by such depression as in women it ranges from 5% to 25% and that of the men from 1.2% to 25.5%. These feelings will go away in few months.

The symptoms include sadness, anxiety, irritability, insomnia, appetite changes, crying without any reason, upset, sleepless nights, having trouble with decision making, unable to eat properly, not having interest in sex, showing seriousness on partner or baby and they may have feeling whether they can take care of the baby. Sometimes these feelings get increased and leads to “Postpartum psychosis”, which is the extreme level of depression.

Causes of Postpartum depression:

There will be sudden changes in the women body after child birth. The levels of hormones like estrogen and progesterone drops suddenly, which may trigger feelings like tension, seriousness and restless. The severity of depression differs from woman to woman.

The level of hormone produced from Thyroid gland also affects the mood swing in woman body. If the levels of such hormone are too low, women have feeling like depression.

A pre-calibrated postpartum depression – screening questionnaire will be given by the doctor and asked to complete it. Based on the rating you scored, your depression levels can be measured. Blood test can help the doctor to find out the problem with thyroid gland.

When the women suffer with postpartum depression, the following activities can help you to get relax.

  1. Take rest as much as possible if possible have a nap while baby is napping.
  2. Take some help from your partner or relatives in baby feeding.
  3. Take bath and dress up neatly every day.
  4. Get outside for sometime regularly with baby sitter.

  1. Counseling: Consult your doctor, a psychiatrist or psychologist, and talk your difficulties. Such counseling will give you better ways to come out from feeling like depression.

  2. Antidepressants: Antidepressants can be used as the treatment for postpartum depression with your doctor guidance; however this medication will affect breast-milk and causes some side effects on baby.

  3. Hormone therapy: As it said above that hormones levels of estrogen and progesterone triggers the depression, the replacement of such hormones will compensate the level drop. This may ease the depression feelings.
